Caring for your jewelry

Gold, platinum and diamonds last for generations with gentle cleaning and a few sensible habits. Softer stones and vermeil ask for a little more.

A soft cloth, a small brush, a bowl of warm water and a gold diamond ring on cream linen

A few minutes, now and then

Most pieces need nothing more than warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, then a lint-free cloth. Once a year, bring them to the atelier for a clean and a check of every setting.

Your care guide

Choose your piece and we will show only the advice that applies to it.

The metal
The stones

Do

Put jewelry on last

Lotions, perfume and hairspray dull metal and cloud stones. Put jewelry on last, and take it off first.

Avoid

The gym, the pool, the garden

Remove rings and bangles for sport, swimming, gardening and housework. Chlorine and knocks are the two things gold dislikes most.

Do

Clean at home

A soft brush, warm water and a drop of mild soap, then rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth.

Avoid

Abrasives and bleach

No toothpaste, baking soda, bleach or abrasive cloths. They scratch metal and dull settings.

Good to know

Diamonds attract oil

Fingertips leave a film that dulls a diamond's fire. A quick clean every few weeks keeps it bright.

Do

Have settings checked

Once a year, have the prongs and settings checked, especially on rings and bracelets that take daily knocks.

Avoid

Ultrasonic and steam

Never put emeralds, pearls or other soft or treated stones in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.

Do

Pearls: last on, first off

Wipe pearls with a soft damp cloth after wearing, and keep them away from perfume and hairspray.

Do

Keep vermeil dry

Vermeil is solid silver under a heavy layer of gold. Keep it away from water, chemicals and perspiration and it keeps its color far longer.

Avoid

Do not polish vermeil hard

Use only a soft cloth on vermeil. Abrasive polishing wears through the gold layer.

Good to know

Platinum develops a patina

Platinum does not wear away. It takes on a soft satin patina with time, and can be polished back to a mirror finish at the atelier.

Good to know

Gold can be refinished

Fine surface marks on gold are natural with wear and can be polished away. White gold can be rhodium-plated again when its brightness softens.

Do

Store pieces apart

Keep each piece in its Ocera box or a soft pouch, so stones cannot scratch metal or each other.

Do

Fasten chains before storing

Fasten the clasp and lay the chain flat, or hang it, so it does not tangle.

Do

Check earring backs

Make sure backs are snug before wearing, and store pairs together.

Good to know

Open bangles gently

Hinged bangles and cuffs are strong across the wrist but not at the hinge. Open them only as far as you need to.
